Marlpool School is a free-standing special school of 63 children aged 5 to 18 with learning difficulties.
Enterprise in Education at Marlpool offers young people the opportunity to develop enterprising attitudes and skills through learning and teaching across the curriculum using real-life contexts where possible. Pupils take responsibility for, and are active in their own learning. Pupils think for themselves and reflect on ideas, issues and experiences. Pupils work collaboratively in a variety of circumstances involving groups of differing size.
Enterprise in Education Challenge Fund
We have been successful in our bid for funding from the challenge fund to support Enterprise in Education in Aberdeen City.
Marlpool Express
One bid was to produce a newspaper using Microsoft Publisher. The Bluebird class of 14-17 year old pupils decided to publish their own newspaper. The newspaper encouraged working together as a team as well as developing a variety of "newspaper skills" - researching and writing articles, using the digital camera etc. Since the first paper was produced pupils have applied for and been interviewed for the various jobs associated with a newspaper- editor, photographer, etc
The Marlpool Express was launched to coincide with National Enterprise Week and included articles about all the enterprise activities currently being run at Marlpool by all 8 classes. The Bluebirds organised the day, including invitations to guests and the programme for the morning. The day was a great success. The newspaper continues to be published monthly with adult support being gradually reduced. The long term plan is to link with a local newspaper as our business partner.
