PUPILS ORGANISE BUSINESS BREAKFAST
Enterprising pupils at Kirkhill Primary School held a Business Breakfast on 9 May to encourage Aberdeen’s business community to build and foster links with schools.  Many schools have already established successful partnerships with companies but members of the Pupil Council at Kirkhill Primary, in Kincorth, decided to organise an event to encourage even more to follow suit.

The ‘Moving On’ event was held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from 8am on Monday morning, when the day will got off to a flying start with a tasty full Scottish breakfast.

Primary 7 pupil Scott Emslie, chair of the Pupil Council, said: "We had heard that adults held Business Breakfasts and we thought we could hold one for pupils to help schools to find business partners.

We hope this will give schools a chance to link up with local businesses and form working partnerships."

The team of 10 pupils from P5-7 have been organising the conference since September, supported by teacher Shona Milne, teaching assistant Moira Fyvie and headteacher Lorraine Brodie.

They were granted funding for the event through the City Council's innovative Challenge Fund, which was set up using money allocated by the Scottish Executive through its Determined to Succeed initiative for enterprise in education.

Every school in Aberdeen was invited to attend and up to 150 people – including pupils from each of the schools who responded -  participated, with representation from at least 20 businesses.

John Stodter, Corporate Director of Learning and Leisure, will officially opened the conference and welcomed delegates.

The opening address was given by Sandra Ewen from Determined to Succeed.   This was followed by presentations by Robin Watson of Petrofac, and Jacquelynn Craw of Talisman, who talked about their companies’ successful partnerships with Kincorth Academy and Ferryhill Primary School.

The event also included a presentation on Aberdeen’s Reading Bus project, given by pupils from the St Machar ASG Primary Schools Enterprise Committee.

The conference ended with a closing speech by Sandra Ewen, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas, and a networking session.
