Kincorth Academy had had a prolific partnership with Petrofac since 1998.

Headteacher Hugh Bryce said this had numerous benefits for both the company and the school.

"The mutual benefits are varied, and they range from mentoring and personal development opportunities for staff and the chance to be involved in projects that we might not have thought of, or may not have had the opportunity to take part in – the most notable was the fundraising for and development of our sports pitch," he said.

Pupils were involved in organising a business dinner at the Marcliffe at Pitfodels on 6 May 2005 to raise money for the school's Katapult theatre group, CV and interview training and work experience, and there have been social events for staff and parents.

"A business partnership such as ours can help a school to be more ambitious and to look at the wider picture, as well as bringing a positive ‘can do’ attitude, which is very much an attribute of the business world."

You can find more details of the Petrofac/Kincorth Partnership on the Kincorth Academy website

KATAPULT

Katapult is Kincorth’s new community theatre company

Katapult’s aim is to involve all, and any members of the community, allowing Kincorth Academy to become involved in the local community and also to involve the community in the school, encouraging residents to work together to share skills and expertise, while having fun at the same time.

They performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  from  August 22-27,  at the Acoustic Music Centre at St Brides Theatre.

Sarah Boyack – MSP Edinburgh Central writes...

Our Festival Fringe stands as a beacon of what is possible in Scotland. It welcomes the great and the good within the Arts and is the epitome of innovation, creativity and buzz. Likewise Kincorth Academy’s KATAPULT Theatre Company stands as a beacon of what is possible in education. Today they present their production of Catherine Cookson’s The Fifteen Streets as part of this celebration of the Arts.

The company illustrate an uncompromising ‘can do – will do’ attitude and an ambition to excel which has seen the formal curriculum and standard school hours swept aside to make way for rehearsals that have operated all summer, weekends and evenings. In a true partnership with the community this production has offered pupils and adults alike, a real opportunity for ‘life through learning and learning through life’.

This determination to succeed has not gone unnoticed within the business community in Aberdeen, and KATAPULT has harnessed a partnership with the oil company Petrofac who, together with Aberdeen City Council, have sponsored the production.

Enterprise within education is now recognised as a key element in providing our young people with the relevant skills they will need in the future. Each of the 73 members of this company has employed these skills with determination and persistence to raise the funds to ensure that you enjoy this musical journey this afternoon. They have found this brand of education exhilarating, relevant and inspiring.

Today’s performance is only a glimpse of what KATAPULT has planned. On returning from Edinburgh, a Civic Reception and an Aberdeen performance await, and productions for the Junior, Senior and Adult Theatre Groups are planned. The formal school curriculum is enhanced by the introduction of a Music Theatre course for senior pupils, directly feeding off the ground-breaking work of KATAPULT.

The Fifteen Streets offers an insight into a time when education was not a child’s right and indeed was often outwith the reach of many. As MSP for Edinburgh I know how important of practical projects such as KATAPLUT are. Please join with me in wishing KATAPULT all the success that their hard work deserves.
